Why the Washing Machine is the Enemy of Good Headwear
If there is one cardinal rule in cap collecting, it is this: never throw a structured cap into a washing machine. The aggressive agitation degrades the interior buckram (the stiff woven mesh behind the front panels), fractures the cardboard or synthetic visor core, and causes unfixable rippling across the crown.
The 5-Step BRIMWORKS Hand-Washing Ritual
Step 1: The Dry Brush
Before introducing water, use a soft-bristle horsehair brush to loosen dry surface dust, lint, and pet hair. Brush in one direction following the grain of the twill.
Step 2: Spot Treatment for Sweat Stains
Mix 1 tablespoon of mild liquid detergent with 2 cups of cool water. For stubborn sweatband salt rings, add a teaspoon of baking soda. Dip an old soft toothbrush into the solution and gently scrub in small circular motions along the inner sweatband.
Step 3: The Cool Water Soak
Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water and a drop of detergent. Submerge the crown, keeping the brim above water if it has a cardboard core (all modern BRIMWORKS caps feature waterproof plastic cores, but keeping soaking minimal is still best practice). Soak for 15 minutes.
Step 4: Cold Rinse
Rinse under a slow stream of cold tap water until no soap residue remains. Never wring or twist the cap!
Step 5: The Towel Mold Dry
Roll up a small hand towel into a tight ball and pack it inside the crown. This holds the original spherical shape while air-drying at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
